1943-2025
Dr Rolf Weissenberger, obstetrician and gynaecologist, made a substantial and lasting contribution to women’s health through decades of dedicated clinical service across three continents. He is remembered as a deeply compassionate clinician, a respected colleague, and a doctor whose commitment to his patients defined his professional life.
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 7 May 1943 to Swiss parents, Dr Weissenberger commenced his medical studies in 1963 at the University of the Witwatersrand. He was inspired to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology under the mentorship of Professor Hugh Philpott, an internationally recognised leader in the field.
Dr Weissenberger undertook postgraduate specialist training in South Africa and Zimbabwe, spending several years providing obstetric care to women in rural and remote communities. These formative experiences provided broad clinical exposure and instilled a strong commitment to equitable, patient-centred care. He later completed advanced specialist training and fellowship in obstetrics and gynaecology in the United Kingdom.
In 1978, Dr Weissenberger immigrated to Australia and settled in Brisbane. He held specialist appointments at the Mater Hospital and the Royal Brisbane Hospital before becoming a key member of the obstetric team at the newly established Sunnybank Private Hospital in 1980.
In the later years of his career, Dr Weissenberger transitioned from obstetrics to fertility medicine. He became a leading expert in reproductive medicine and served as Director at City Fertility Centre Southside, where he helped many individuals and couples achieve their goal of parenthood. His calm and compassionate manner was particularly valued in this field.
Dr Weissenberger retired from clinical practice in 2015. He was devoted to his family, including his wife and three children, and his love for medicine inspired his daughter, Leisha, to follow in his footsteps and pursue a career in medicine. He is remembered as a dedicated clinician, mentor, and colleague who truly loved his work and whose legacy endures through the many lives he touched.
