Acknowledging the theme of this issue, the current RANZCOG clinical guidance statements and guidelines that help inform the topic the topic of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) include:
- Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society (ADIPS) 2025 consensus recommendations for the screening, diagnosis and classification of gestational diabetes
- Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora – Testing for, diagnosing and managing gestational diabetes (diabetes of pregnancy) (in progress, anticipated launch in 2026)
Guideline Development
Since 2021, RANZCOG resources have been developed with a commitment to evidence-based medicine. Guideline development follows established processes, aligned with NHMRC standards and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) methodology.
Under this approach, the College has published 17 evidence-based clinical guidelines to date, developed under the direction of the Research, Policy and Guidelines Committee (RPGC, formerly the Women’s Health Committee), and covering a diverse range of topics across obstetrics and gynaecology. These guidelines reflect the significant commitment and expertise of the 150 RANZCOG members and affiliates who participated in a Guideline Development Group (GDG), and whose contributions have been instrumental to their success.
More recently, Research and Policy have expanded our scope to include guideline implementation, which in the past year alone has included the development or update of 10 RANZCOG Patient Information Pamphlets, a Quick Reference Guide for Primary Care, and a RANZCOG eLearning module. These resources strengthen access to practical, up to date, and evidence-based information.
The Research and Policy Team and the RPGC would like to thank all GDG Chairs and members for their valued work.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be a busy year. Research and Policy work currently underway, or expected to commence in 2026, includes:

- Development of a new evidence-based RANZCOG guideline on Management of complications in the second stage of labour: assisted vaginal birth, shoulder dystocia, and Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury (OASI) (likely publication date in 2026/2027).
