The human genome can be described by considering its origin. For sexually reproducing species, the genome originates at the moment of conception; for humans that is when the 23 chromosomes from the egg cell of the mother combine with the 23 chromosomes from a sperm cell of the father. Together, those 46 chromosomes make up the human genome.
